Why would someone need a SAP evaluation? Employees in the transportation industry who violate a Department of Transportation (DOT) drug or alcohol regulation must immediately be removed from safety sensitive functions and complete the SAP return-to-duty process before they can be considered for return to duty to a DOT safety sensitive position.

 

What does the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) do?

The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.The SAP must conduct an in-person evaluation, send required reports to the employer’s Designated Employee Representative (DER), monitor the employee(s) through education or treatment and conduct a follow up evaluation.

 

The SAP is qualified by 1) holding certain credentials which indicate they have sufficient training or education to provide such evaluations, 2) attending a training on DOT rules which has been approved by the Department of Transportation, and 3) passing a qualifying exam.
